Instagram is a visual-only platform owned by Facebook. It is used through a mobile phone app and is astonishingly successful with over 600 million regular users worldwide, including 14 million in the UK.
In terms of gender demographics, 68% of Instagrammers are female. 59% of internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 use Instagram and 33% of internet users between the ages of 30 and 49 use Instagram. According to one study, 17% of teenagers say that Instagram is the most important social media platform to them and 90% of users are under 35 years old.

What works for Instagram is the posting of high quality, interesting and engaging photography. Through this medium it is possible to gain thousands of followers relatively quickly compared with other social media platforms.
